French Book with 112 Colored Engravings (11” x 7 ½”) & 1 map (24”x 20”) from “Costumes De Paris a Travers Les Siecles” from 1880’s (19th Century).
This rare and delightful collection contains a compilation of 112 picturesque & sometimes humorous plates (gravures) from 1880 (11” x 7 ½” or 19 ½cm x 28cm) and reminiscent of “Les images d’Epinal” which was a very popular drawing style of the time.
The plates show the signatures of the creators that brought the figures to life, 1 signature for the artist & 1 for the colorist.
French Fashions, styles, professions, ways of life, pastimes, modes of transportation and progress throughout the centuries come alive in this complete collection of often amusing and educational engravings, from the creation of “Lutece” (Ancient Paris) to the end of the 1800’s.
Edited by F. Roy. XIXe SIÈCLE.
These original plates from the 1880’s are in great shape, colors great and intact, borders perfect, no defects, only 1 page has a few stains on it and 2 others have a minor tear, not affecting the image, and near the binding.
They were bound together as a collection, in the order of the plates, from 1 to 112, with no text in back.
Rather than taking photos of the entire plate, we often took a close up of the subject so that it can be better inspected but the plates are all in full with perfect borders, no foxing or defects.
A colored folding map is included at the end of the volume size 24”x 19 1/2” or 76cm x 49cm but has tears along where the folds are. Several of these prints have sold on the internet up to 45.00 each. They could easily be matted & framed as an outstanding collection adorning any wall, in a residence or a boutique, fashion business etc....
MEANING OF “IMAGES D’EPINAL”
“IMAGES D’EPINAL” refers to a very bright and colorful image from the 1800’s, often humourous. Historically, this type of image was created in the town of Epinal, which is why it bears its name. The subjects covered could be historical, religious themes, calendar related or referring to famous novels of the time. Figuratively, an Epinal image could also relate to an idea or a concept long forgotten, a cliché reminding one of the difference between then and now.

Below are mentioned a few of the plates within the book, from 17 to 84. There are a lot more in the volume since there are 112 in all: all the ones created in color, but it would take too long to write the complete list. We also cannot include all 112 photos below, but we have taken them all and can send any upon request.
