VERY OLD PIECES, VERY LARGE GATHERING BASKETS FROM BORNEO

These are B8 and B9, 2 old gathering baskets from Borneo

Measures:  

19" x 12"

18 1/2" x 14"

We will send them inside each other. The 2nd one is free upon the purchase of the 1st and is equally as large.
These 2 harvest baskets from Kalimantan were carried on the head, which is the purpose of the hollow foot that allows for a head to fit in (seen some of the photos).

These very large rare and old baskets were collected 25 years ago in Borneo Island, and were once used for carrying harvest goods and other things.
Both pieces are of Brown Tones (darker because of old age) -- a nice Patina
The principal materials used for weaving are cane, rotan and reeds on a wood or cane frame as here.
You are getting 2 rare large old rotan rattan baskets seen on all the photos with a nice dark patina.
These old authentic baskets were handwoven out of rattan (rotan, a climbing palm found in jungle forests). Very hard to find old baskets in great condition like these in those humid climates.
Rattan is not only exceptionally strong it is also acknowledged as being amongst the finest medium used to make mats, carry bags and traps. 
Women used to weave these strong baskets (that opened at the top, with a lid) with strong but thin rattan strips, using age-old patterns and time consuming techniques.
There is a remarkable individual variation found between basket types in Indonesia: closely woven ones for seeds, strong light ones for harvesting crops and decorated ones for ceremonies.

The ancient art of basket weaving remains alive today among primitive people though threatened by encroaching industrialization. Each of these 2 baskets was masterfully handcrafted long ago with meticulous attention to detail not only for strength but to graphically tell a story about the history and customs of its weaver’s culture.
