"Skull-toting man -eating tribesmen, so are the Asmat. For many years, they have scared the world at large with their headhunting activities. The Asmat are part of a wood age culture, living amongst the estuaries of the world's largest and least accessible alluvial swamp. The rivers, which snake through their mangrove forest daily rise with the tides to submerge the entire area for up to a hundred miles inland. "

The Asmat were also to achieve world fame in 1961 when Michael Rockefeller, son of the late Vice-President, disappeared off their coast and was said to have been eaten by the tribes while on a trip to collect rare artifacts for the Rockefeller museum institute, artwork which can still be seen there today.
