Vintage Mindibit Village Ancestor Spirit Effigy Statue with marsupial cuscus on its head with accents of bush twine 

Scarce artifact

Meant to guide and protect the tribe or clan and protect against evil spirits lurking in the woods and kept preciously in the men's house

Each statue also represents a specific ancestor and brings the spirit of the deceased among the clan.

Those spirits then share with the living the positive attributes they possessed during their natural lives.

Ancestors assist their descendants with food, health, advice and counter sorcery attempted via the ancestor spirit plane.

The ancestor figures are kept in the Haus Tambaran or men's house.

This ancestral piece from the Middle Sepik region, was hand carved and is meant to represent a protective ancestor. 

This important spirit mask was traditionally consulted for advice in unlucky times.
