This authentic and extremely rare detailed 1796 hand-colored (at the time) costume fashion plate of 'Sheik de l'Arabie Heureuse' came from the original 5 volumes very rare “Encyclopédie des Voyages” (Voyage historique, littéraire et pittoresque) dedicated to costumes and ways of life from Europe, Asia, America, and Africa from Grasset de Saint-Sauver (France, 1757-1810). The set was published in 1796 and lists 432 full page illustrations which are hand colored and which this is one of. The illustrations are fanciful and fascinating. These books were a truly remarkable and beautiful compilation of supposed anthropological knowledge of the time.
From “Costumes de Différents Pays”, this is the plate of 'Sheik de l'Arabie Heureuse', an early 19th century Drawing Hand-colored etching dated 1796, a hand-tinted engraving on paper by Labrousse (France, Bordeaux, late 18th century).
The National Library of Canada prepared an exhibition from its Rare Book Collection entitled "Passages: A Treasure Trove of North American Exploration." The library highlights an image of the rare book "Encyclopedie des voyages" and a biographical sketch of Canadian traveler and author Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur (1757-1810).
Whether by accident or design, this rare encyclopedia could just as well have been entitled Encyclopedie des costumes. In fairness to the author, Grasset, Saint Sauveur did indicate his true intention in the long subtitle to his work which indicates that his encyclopedia contains a brief history of all the people but a complete collection of their civilian, military, religious and ceremonial dress, drawn from nature, engraved with care and colored with water colors. In total, there are 432 colored plates all done by the author himself.
As an etcher, drawer and writer, Grasset de Saint-Sauver was literally bewitched by costumes. Born in Montreal in April 1757, at the beginning of the 7 years war, he went to live in France after the conquest of New France by the British. He studied at Sainte-barbe College in Paris, and then embarked on a writing and diplomatic career. After serving as French vice-consul in Hungary for several years, he was promoted to consul in Cairo. He died in Paris in may 1810.
Size of plate alone: 10 3/8” x 7 5/8” (26.35 x 19.37 cm)
Size of engraving alone: 8 ½” x 6” (21.59 x 15.24 cm).
