Used to protect the warrior against arrows directed at him during a revenge raid against an opposite tribe.

A very scarce and large older panel collected in the field 25 years back with an eye motif to scare opponent.
East Sepik, Papua New Guinea,
48 1/2" tall by 11” and curved to protect more efficiently on the sides.

Decorated with carved geometric motifs, polychrome designs created with natural pigments.
It was stored in the man's house when not in use and the motifs identify the clan from this village.
it is also considered a spiritual protection during war, hence the motifs often created to scare the opponent and freeze him in his tracks, in this one's case, it has 5 eyes staring at the enemy.
