Schreber’s “Fantastic Beasts”

We recently closed our gallery of rare antique books and prints, some framed, some not, and all our artwork has been reduced as a result.

This is an authentic antique print offering, an original, authentic, very rare, hand colored antique copperplate engraving of Lemur Lanatus by Johann Schreber 1755-1787 seen on 9 of the photos.  On photo 2, 5 and 10, you can see how extremely decorative a collection of many original antique monkey prints framed in our unique hand-painted frames (lithos dating from the 1700’s and 1800’s) can be on a wall.

The remaining photos show other framed antique prints we have for sale.

I am sorry about some of the 7 photos, I did not realize that on 3 of them, there is a reflection on the glass that is not really there. The first 2 photos show you that it is not, that it is just a reflection.

Professionally framed and matted in “top of the line” real silk acid free mat.

Paper size of the plate is 7 5/8” x 9 ¾”, excellent mint condition.

Finished size: 15” x 12”

Original vivid hand-coloring on chain-linked paper.

It is becoming rarer and rarer to find prints from the 1700’s especially in this amazing condition and of this quality.

This very rare print comes from an extraordinary selection of original hand-colored engravings from Die Saugthiere in Abbildungen Nach Der Natur Mit Beschreibungen “The Mammals”, compiled by Johann Christian Daniel Von Schreber (1739-1810). Published in Erlangen, Germany, in 1775.

This lavishly illustrated book focused upon the mammals of the world.

The plates from this work are exceptional for their quality of color and paper. The entire work is comprised of 412 animal prints, prints which are exceptional in their quality of color and paper. The paper is a very nice chain-linked variety that is highly durable and strong. The color is rich in detail and depth.

It is becoming rarer and rarer to find prints from the 1700’s especially in this amazing condition and of this quality.

In many instances, the artists had never encountered the animals that they brought to life on paper: they created these endearing animals from the information that explorers brought back from their adventures around the world. Therefore, some of the drawings, though representing real animals, have a sort of dream-like quality to them. They are known as Schreber’s “Fantastic Beasts”.

Each plate includes the original scientific name attributed to the animal.

These original hand colored engravings are printed on watermarked, laid paper. The use of Gum Arabic brings out the great detail in these plates. Each plate measures 8” x 10”, with distinctive plate marks, and ample margin for framing.
