BEADED HATS:

While plain hanwoven rattan conic hats are worn in the rice patties all over Indonesia to protect the bearer from the hot sun while in the fields, a tightly beaded masterpiece, such as the ones we offer here, was used by the aristocracy during wedding ceremonies and other celebrations, in Borneo and Sumatra. Made from a hand-woven bamboo frame, palm leaves and trade cloth, they were heavily decorated with specially shaped glass seed beaded decorative panels.
