Very rare older Spirit mask representing an ancestor, a protective idol kept in the men's house.

Japandai Village

East Sepik region.

Papua New guinea, PNG.

It was hand carved out of one solid piece of red native wood. This unusual mask is seen here on all the photos except the ones of natives I took while there.

Such masks were most important as they were oracles consulted for advice in times of sickness, disease and wars by the clan or tribe.

Measures: 40"  x 7" x 9"

Made from solid wood, very heavy: 9 lbs
