These beautiful prints are from an old, out -of- print book published about 20 years ago. You are bidding on an actual page from this book - NOT a reprinting. It is a fine collector plate of some of Pierre Joseph Redoute's botanical prints which was first published in 1833. The collection was chosen by Redoute himself from his hundreds and hundreds of beautiful works.

PRINTS ARE SO MUCH BETTER IN REAL, CLEAR, CRISP, VIBRANT. MY PHOTOS DO NOT DO THEM JUSTICE.

Redoute’s work was published during the early 1800s in several different editions. Redoute was born in 1759 in Saint Hubert, northern France and died in 1840 in Paris. He began his career by painting the cathedrals of Northern Europe, but upon seeing some flower paintings by Van Huysum in the Netherlands, he became inspired to paint botanicals and learned the art of engraving and lithography. He soon became renowned for his work and tutored such people as Queen Marie-Antoinette, Empress Josephine, Marie-Louise, and Queen Marie-Amelie. His fame began to rise when Empress Josephine Bonaparte hired him in 1798, convinced that only he could fulfill her desire to portrait her beloved flower gardens in the chateau of Malmaison. Redoute used the technique of stipple engraving aquatint and printed, most of all, in the finest of color. His fame also came from his precise technique, multi-colored printed and hand-colored representations of nature which were extremely accurate and beautiful.
