Rare Unique Ancestral Japandai Wood Oracle Spirit Mask, Sepik River, Papua New Guinea
Item 13A15 in our inventory
Very rare older Spirit mask representing an ancestor, a protective idol kept in the men's house.
East Sepik region.
It was hand carved out of one solid piece of wood, traces of some polychrome motifs created with natural color pigments remain. This unusual mask is seen here on all the photos except the ones of natives I took while there.
Such masks were most important as they were oracles consulted for advice in times of sickness, disease and wars by the clan or tribe.
24" high x 7" wide x 4"
