Aibom Meri  Bride Statue wearing bride's veil, once hand carved in Japandai village, a fine example of Oceanic Art from Papua New Guinea

Item 32A0.

WHAT DISTINGUISHES THIS STATUE IS THE FACT SHE HAS REMNANTS OF HUMAN HAIR ON HER SCALP, OLDER PIECE. IT IS RARE TO FIND A STATUE WITH HAIR ADDED ON NOWADAYS.

Rare Hand carved bridal Statue wearing the traditional wedding veil as seen on 2 of the photos of tribal women (veil made in life out of shells and bush twine) from Japandai Village.
This is an Aibom meri statue with nassa shell eyes & a bush grass skirt colored with natural pigments and hand twisted bark twine running thru her nose and ears. Quite unique: the female statue is wearing the traditional heavy wedding veil, time consuming to create and very valuable to the wearer in life, this one instead of shells is represented as a wooden head covering,  decorated with an ancestor's face at the bottom in back for protection and good luck, and  also carrying the Clan bird effigy related to the tribe on top.
East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea
Measures: 34" X 9" X 8"
The men of Japandai have carved at times such a unique statue representing an Aibom woman sometimes carrying a Chambri pottery fireplace on her head sometimes a wedding veil. The woman can take many forms. During a long conflict with a neighboring village, these statues were set up in the village and gardens in a hopeful effort to fight the competing sorcerers' black magic from the enemy village.
Japandai is considered to be part of the Middle Sepik. The carvers have a reputation for copying other village's art or style which can cause dissent and battle between clans.
This is a scarce artifact, seen on all the photos: This vintage ancestral piece from the East Sepik region, was hand carved.
All our Tribal East Sepik river region carvings, from Papua New Guinea, were collected on the premises.
