Redoute was born in 1759 in Saint Hubert, northern France and died in 1840 in Paris. He began his career by painting the cathedrals of Northern Europe, but upon seeing some flower paintings by Van Huysum in the Netherlands, he became inspired to paint botanicals and learned the art of engraving and lithography\u003c\/span\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe soon became renowned for his work and tutored such people as Queen Marie-Antoinette, Empress Josephine, Marie-Louise, and Queen Marie-Amelie. His fame began to rise when Empress Josephine Bonaparte hired him in 1798, convinced that only he could fulfill her desire to portrait her beloved flower gardens in the chateau of Malmaison. Redoute used the technique of stipple engraving aquatint and printed, most of all, in the finest of color.
