Embracing color, artists produce major paintings around Papua New Guinea’s Independence in 1975, aspects of colonial history, customs, people and their own experiences with a visual inventiveness suggesting new ways of thinking about the emergence of ‘modern art’ beyond the West.
The PNG artists see themselves as the custodians of their remote country. The paintings we see on canvas today were, originally, often painted in the sand and only lasted until the wind blew. Canvas and art paper are more durable and have given the world a chance to learn about this amazing and rare folk art, while offering us as well, a glimpse into a way of life from afar which customs and values differ so much from our own.
Papua New Guinea's art forms are as diverse as they are distinctive. In a country where language varies from village to village, it can be expected that artistic expression will differ in style just as dramatically. Paintings, weapons and carvings are produced by different people in different places, according to their traditional skills and beliefs, and they make wonderful collector’s pieces as they are each unique and a reflection of the artist’s talent and interpretation of life, an insight into legends and rituals from remote lands as well.
In the Highlands of Papua New Guinea, self-decoration is associated with festivals and ceremonies where people reinforce their identity as members of a group or clan. One of the most important occasions for ceremonial display is the Mount Hagen Festival where people from many different language groups in the Highlands gather every year in full decoration. This Festival and the Goroka Show were started in the 1950s by the first European settlers in the Highlands to encourage enemies of different clans to gather to reconcile group animosities. Particular combinations of body painting, wigs, feather headdresses, necklaces, armbands, aprons, ear and nose rings signify who you are and where you are from.
By midday, the arena, which is the size of a football field, is packed with painted men and women, storming across the grass in line, abreast, spears cocked for action, and painted, coiffed and decorated with the fluffy plumage of several thousand exotic birds....
White-out and brilliant acrylics are used as face paint, pig fat or oil adds that lustrous shine to the body and the results are spectacular and often represented in paintings.
