Through regular trips to Bali, Indonesia, we worked closely with some of the best native artists in order to create exceptional hand painted cloths of the best quality with intricate time-consuming details of designs, beautiful colors and motifs, each unique and signed by the creator that hand painted it. Each motif was created in a limited amount of 5 pieces at most as the artists do not like to repeat their creations, they find it boring.
We had these outstanding sarongs painted especially for us in Ubud, the Mecca of the painters and artists, in Bali. Each piece is different, unique, completely hand-drawn, and hand-painted (with the use of wax as a divider of colors, a process that dates from past centuries) and signed by the known artist that designed and painted it, easily washable as well. Sometimes some wax remains on the cloth which will come off upon first wash.
Together, we created unique colorful tropical motifs in small quantities (and let the artist improvise from there) so we have only 5 each pattern of each at most, making them more unique. The artists that painted them for us are some of the best in Bali, with an extremely great sense of design, color combination and detail, the result being these one-of-a-kind outstanding pieces that you will not find anywhere else. These are high quality pieces, not the average wrap-around. The painting process is time consuming and an exercise in accuracy as dripping often occurs in spite of the wax dividers. Enjoy this unique and very decorative work of art.
Sarongs are many things to many people. Throughout history the world has known the sarong by different names as well: pareo/kanga/toga/surong/sarong. The people from the South Pacific islands of Tahiti and Hawaii call sarongs, "Pareos", in the Southeast Asian countries of Indonesia , Thailand, Malyasia, and the Phillipines it's called a "Surong", in India a similar garment is named "Sri" and Africa they call it a "Kanga". In ancient times of Rome and Greece it was named a "Toga".
We choose to use the Indonesian name "Sarong", because it's the most popular name today and where the majority of Sarongs/Pareos/Kangas are made. Sarongs are mainly manufactured in Indonesia, but they are being made all over the world and even here in the United States. There are as many names as there are ways to use a sarong!!!
